Zero Waste Volunteers

The aim of the Zero Waste Volunteer programme (formerly The Master Composter Project) is to encourage people to take responsibility for the waste that they produce.  We endeavour to do this by giving them the support that they need in order to compost their food and garden waste at home, save money and reduce waste further by advising on other waste prevention campaigns like Love Food Hate Waste, Stop the Drop, Peat Free Compost and Recycle Now.

This is being achieved by training volunteers to go out into their local communities and promote these campaigns by attending events, running workshops, giving talks or helping people on an individual basis.

This programme has been developed by Zero Waste Scotland to help deliver the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Plan.

Love Food Hate Waste encourages people to reduce the food they dispose of through helping them to plan their meals, make better use of their freezer, look at portion size and suggesting what could be done with leftovers.

Stop The Drop offers solutions to the issue of unwanted mail, with websites and phone numbers that can be contacted to stop unwanted mail coming through your door. The campaign offers “5 Easy Ways” to stop unwanted mail.

Peat Free – encourages people to choose peat free products, through educating the public of the value of peat bogs as a unique habitat.

Peat bogs cover just 3% of the world’s surface, but they store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined.

Home Composting – We also encourage people to compost their garden waste through home composting.  As part of this we can offer a free home visit service, to give advice on how to get the most out of your compost bin.

Recycle Now - raises awareness about how, where, what and why people should recycle.

Composting in Flats. We are also involved in encouraging people who live in tenement flats in Aberdeen who do not have access to a brown garden waste bin, to compost their food waste along with their neighbours in a green johanna compost bin.  We are able to offer training, support and a free composter and kitchen caddy to help get people started.  Six households in Torry have already started reducing the food waste they place in their domestic waste bin.

Aberdeenshire Council has discounted composting units available for purchase and a limited number of Green Cone food digesters.  For details call the Wasteline 0845 600 3 900 or visit http://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/waste/composting/Composting_Info.asp
