Aberdeen Forward is a charity and Company Limited by Guarantee, that was established in 1999. The company was initially set up to fund and support local community waste minimisation and recycling projects. As an ENTRUST enrolled environmental body, Aberdeen Forward receives its funding for its core initiative from the landfill tax credit scheme. In Aberdeen, the landfill operator is SITA. Additional support comes from Aberdeen City Council (www.aberdeencity.gov.uk) and Shell (www.shell.com).
In 2002, Aberdeen Forward widened its remit to deliver sustainable development projects and was successful in accessing lottery money to fund projects developed with partner organisations from the private and public sector as well as community groups.
In 2009, the Centre was funded by Landfill Communities Fund and supported by the Third Sector Enterprise fund, which enabled the Aberdeen Forward to move premises to Poynernook Road and open the Sustainable Communities Centre, providing both community and business resources and at the same time helping the charity to become self-sustainable.
