Aberdeen Forward has been awarded £75,730 of funding from the Climate Challenge Fund to drive forward an environmental initiative in the city that will provide the public with support and advice on climate challenge issues to encourage them to reduce their carbon foot print.
The aptly named project, ‘Transition Towns Initiative’, will be run over the next 18 months in Aberdeen City and will aim to reduce the carbon footprint of everyday life. The project will help the charity further its aims by boosting the level of participation on city allotments, providing environmental volunteering opportunities and helping divert waste from landfill.
It is estimated that this initiative will lead to carbon savings of 2,146 tonnes. It will encourage new and existing allotment holders to reactivate their plots and start growing food for the benefit of their family and friends. In addition, Aberdeen Forward will run workshops on sustainable living, reuse and other environmental topics to raise awareness of the dangers as well as the small adjustments that can be made to help protect the environment.
Chief Executive, Lynn Smith, commented: “This is a fantastic boost for Aberdeen, which will give us a great opportunity to educate and inform those of the impacts of everyday life. Everybody can do their bit to contribute to helping the environment and we are looking forward to getting this message across and promoting green living.”
